Brown Trout

A good friend of mine, an avid fly fisherman, wanted me to do a trout sculpture for him...tried as I did to talk him out of it, he simply would not be swayed.  So I finally agreed to paint a replica for him but I joked with him that it would have to have feathers!  (Since I mostly specialize in birds…)

I started out purchasing an air brush, because that is what almost all fish painters use.  I got very frustrated with it, as the paint job looked too plastic like, too much like taxidermy, and I wanted it to be “artistic.”

Finally after three attempts, I pulled out my brushes and my oil paints and got to work.  At least I knew I could paint with them!  It does take considerably longer to do with brushes and wet blending slow drying oils, and requires a lot more skill, but I think the rich look was well worth it…
